
LIFEGUARD INSTRUCTOR RECERTIFICATION COURSE
The Lifeguard Instructor Recertification Course is designed for currently certified American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructors to renew their credentials. This course ensures instructors are up to date with Red Cross program changes and reinforces teaching and evaluation skills needed to effectively certify new lifeguards.

Duration: Approximately 9 hours

Format: In-person only

Required Certification: Current or recently expired (no morethan 30 days) Lifeguard Instructor certification​
Prerequisites
Participants must:

Be at least 17 years old

Hold a current American Red Cross Deepwater Lifeguarding certification (with CPR/AED and First Aid)

Successfully complete the online Lifeguard Instructor Precourse (typically 2–4 hours)

Pass the Lifeguarding Instructor Precourse Skills Assessment, which includes:

Swim 150 yards continuously using freestyle or breastroke followed by treading water for 2 minutes using legs only followed by a 50 yard continuous swim again using either freestyle or breastrtoke.

Timed brick retrieval swim (within 1:40)

Demonstration of critical lifeguarding, CPR/AED, and first aid skills

Certification Issued
Upon successful completion, participants receive:

Lifeguarding Instructor Certification, valid for 2 years

Authorized to teach:

Lifeguarding (all versions, including shallow water & waterfront)

What to Bring to Class
Please bring a modest bathing suit, towel, sun screen, dry clothes, snacks, water, and goggles (optional). Also, student will be required to submerge without goggles so consider bringing a second pair of contact lenses if you wear them. Student will be given 1/2 hour for lunch and can either bring lunch, buy lunch at the concession stand, or go off campus to get lunch.
